Access Schedules: Scheduling Web Access Previous | Next
Contents

Browsers that use WebDoubler for Web access can be restricted from access at certain times of the day or the day of the week. In other words, you can define a schedule (or schedules) for when Web access is allowed. You can create a schedule for all users of the proxy, or assign schedules to individual users using the scheduler in conjunction with Proxy Authentication.

Getting Started

To use the Access Schedule plug-in, open a Web browser and access the WebDoubler Administration home page as described in the "Plug-In Administration" section of the WebDoubler User's Guide. Click the "WebDoubler Access Schedule Administration" link to open the Access Schedule Administration page.

The first section on this page allows you to choose whether or not to apply schedules at all. This can be handy for temporarily disabling scheduled restrictions without having to reconfigure your schedule(s). To enable the access scheduling plug-in, select "Limit WebDoubler access..." and then click "Save Changes".

When you first access this page, no schedules will be available in the schedule list. Click the "New Schedule..." link to open the detail page and specify an access schedule.

Schedule Options

The first step is to assign a name for the schedule. The name is not important except for the fact that this will be used for identification purposes, so choose a name that will make sense for you later. For example, if you will only be creating one schedule that will limit Web use to between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, you might give the schedule a name of "Office Hours Only".

Next, you can optionally provide an override name and password. If you enter these fields, a username and password dialog box will be displayed when a browser attempts to access the Web during "off hours", when access is denied. If the user enters a username and password that matches the Override Username and Override Password, then WebDoubler will allow Web access. If you leave these fields blank, then Web access will not be possible during off hours (as defined in the schedule) at all.

Schedule

The Schedule section of the page is nothing but a series of 168 check boxes, one for each hour of the week. Check the boxes that correspond to times that Web access should be allowed. Times of the day or week that correspond to unchecked boxes will be considered off hours, and Web access will be denied (unless the user enters the correct override username and password).

If your browser is javascript enabled, a number of buttons can be used to make the job of checking and unchecking large numbers of boxes easier. To check or uncheck an entire day, click the day link at the left of the grid. Buttons are also provided below the grid to check or uncheck all the boxes.

When you have completed the schedule, click the "Save Changes" button. Schedules can also be deleted by accessing the schedule details page and clicking "Delete Schedule".

Assigning Schedules

To activate the schedule, return to the "WebDoubler Access Schedule Administration" page. Be sure that the Access Schedule plug-in is enabled; if it isn't choose the "Limit WebDoubler access ..." radio button and click "Save Changes". Then select the schedule to use by clicking the appropriate radio button in the "Active" column of the schedule list and then click "Activate Schedule".

The active schedule will be applied to all users except the WebDoubler Administrator. Users will only be able to use the Web during off hours if they enter the correct override username and password (if one is defined).

You can also set access schedules for each user defined in the "Proxy Authentication" plug-in. For details on creating user accounts, see the "Proxy Authentication" section of the User's Guide. Access schedules for individual users are selected using a pop-up menu on the Proxy Authentication "Edit User" page.
